To the Writers of Kryme ai,
There is a particular kind of silence that settles over a crime novel when the writer has lost confidence in the thing beneath it.
The manuscript may still be moving. Chapters are being written. Characters arrive at doors, sit across from suspects, discover files, receive laboratory results, revisit old crime scenes. The detective remains busy enough to give the appearance of progress, and if you were to look only at the surface, you might conclude that the story is alive.
Yet the writer feels something else.
A drag.
A faint resistance.
