There is a question I have been thinking about quite a bit lately, partly because of where artificial intelligence is heading and partly because of the way crime writers are beginning to use it.

Should you use an AI prompt to outline a novel?

A year or two ago, I might have answered that question very differently. The first generation of writing prompts was mostly about convenience. You would tell an AI that you were writing a murder mystery, give it a few details about the protagonist and setting, ask for thirty chapters, and wait while it produced something that looked remarkably like a complete outline. There would be a body in the opening chapters, several suspects, a few secrets, an apparent breakthrough somewhere near the midpoint, a setback late in the book, and a confrontation with the killer at the end.

If you had never outlined a crime novel before, the result could be impressive simply because there was so much of it. Thirty numbered chapters have a certain authority when they appear on the screen all at once. The story looks substantial. It looks organized. Most importantly, it looks finished enough that you can imagine sitting down the next morning and beginning Chapter One.

Unfortunately, appearance is one of the great dangers in both crime fiction and artificial intelligence.

An outline can contain thirty chapters and still have no real investigation inside it. It can contain six suspects without giving any of them a credible reason to remain under suspicion. It can contain fifteen clues without establishing where those clues came from, why they were not discovered earlier, or what they actually prove. It can contain a spectacular final twist that depends on information the reader never had a chance to know. It can move the protagonist from discovery to interview to surveillance footage to forensic report so efficiently that nobody stops to ask whether any of those discoveries logically caused the next one.

This is where the question becomes more interesting, because I do not believe the conclusion should be that AI prompts are bad for outlining.

I think the conclusion is that most of us have been asking too little of them.

Crime fiction depends on suspicion, patience, curiosity, and the willingness to keep asking questions after easier answers have already appeared.

That is the investigation mindset.

A crime writer is not simply a storyteller. A crime writer is someone who looks at an event and asks what pressure created it. Who benefits from it. Who is lying about it. Who is protecting something. Who misunderstands what they saw. Who has mistaken convenience for truth.

That is why crime fiction remains so durable. At its best, the genre trains both writer and reader to resist the obvious explanation.

The strongest crime writers do not merely invent crimes. They investigate them.

And that distinction matters.

Because once a writer begins thinking this way, the work changes. A plot is no longer a sequence of scenes. It becomes an inquiry. A suspect is no longer a colorful character. They become a pressure point. A clue is no longer information. It becomes leverage. A conversation is no longer dialogue. It becomes a contest over what can remain hidden.

The investigative mindset does not make writing colder.

It makes it more honest.

It forces the writer to respect causality, motive, timing, and consequence. It reminds us that readers are not waiting to be tricked. They are waiting to trust us.

That trust must be earned.

It usually arrives somewhere after the outline feels stable but before the manuscript has been truly examined. The chapters appear to connect. The suspects seem believable. The midpoint lands with enough force to feel important. The ending delivers the revelation the writer intended. On the surface, the machine appears operational.

This is where many writers stop questioning the structure.

Not because they have become careless, but because familiarity begins disguising weakness.

A writer lives inside the architecture of the story for so long that they unconsciously start supplying missing logic without realizing it. They understand motives that never fully reached the page. They carry timeline explanations in their head that the manuscript itself never established. They know why a suspect behaved irrationally because they remember an earlier draft where the explanation existed before it was cut three revisions ago.

The reader has access to none of this.

The reader sees only what survives contact with the page.

That distinction matters more in crime fiction than perhaps any other genre because crime fiction invites scrutiny by design. The reader is not passively consuming events. They are evaluating evidence. Testing assumptions. Challenging causality. Looking for fractures in the chain.

A weak romance subplot may disappoint a reader emotionally. A weak crime structure can collapse reader trust entirely.

That collapse rarely happens at the exact moment the writer expects. Most crime novels do not fail where the writer believes the danger exists. They fail quietly, in smaller places. A detective who ignores an obvious question. A suspect who takes a risk the story has not properly justified. A reveal that technically works but arrives unsupported by earlier pressure. A clue that mattered only because the author said it mattered.

These are not dramatic failures while drafting. In fact, many of them feel invisible until a sharp reader applies pressure.

That is why May matters.

January built the foundation. February created movement. March disciplined the evidence. April turned the pressure live between characters.

May is the audit.

This is where the manuscript stops being treated like an idea and starts being treated like a case file under examination. Not to punish the story. Not to strip the joy from writing. But to expose what the structure cannot currently defend.

Because a crime novel does not fail because the writer lacked imagination.

It fails because the structure could not survive scrutiny.

The confrontation that arrives with emotional heat but leaves nothing altered when it ends. These scenes do not usually feel broken while a writer is drafting them. They feel useful. Necessary, even. Questions are being asked. Facts are being discussed. Somebody is resisting. Somebody is pressing. On the surface, the machinery of interrogation appears to be in motion.

But motion is not pressure.

And without pressure, an interrogation scene becomes one of the most expensive forms of dead weight a crime novel can carry, because it gives the illusion of progress while secretly slowing everything down.

That is why April matters.
